Many observers were caught off guard by the impressive ratings Bellator 131 drew recently, but the promotion’s new president, Scott Coker, believes the card appealed to more than just hardcore fans.

Bellator 131 went down on November 15th, and the main event featured Tito Ortiz scoring a split decision win over fellow, UFC vet, Stephan Bonnar.

The card ended up averaging over 1 million viewers for SPIKE, and around 2 million people tuned in for the main event.

Coker recently appeared on MMA Junkie.com Radio , and while discussing the card’s tremendous success, he stated (quote via MMA Junkie.com):

“I think one of things we were able to do is bring the fringe fans back, the casual fans back, to MMA. I think that’s something that MMA needs. Let’s bring back those fans and not rely on just the hardcores.”

Bellator 131 also featured Will Brooks stopping Michael Chandler to become the promotion’s lightweight champion.

During the segment, Coker also discussed the importance of reducing Bellator’s schedule, so that the promotion has time to effectively promote each event and fight. In the past, Bellator promoted weekly events during each of its spring and winter seasons.
