Report: Despite Upcoming Light-Heavyweight Tilt With Wanderlei Silva, Brian Stann Says “I’m a Middleweight”

Although Brian Stann’s resume includes winning the WEC Light-Heavyweight Championship, and despite the fact he will compete at 205 pounds this weekend versus Wanderlei Silva, the veteran will be returning to middleweight.

In a pre-UFC on FUEL TV 8 report from MMA Weekly, Stann relayed:

“I’m a middleweight.  I could compete at light heavyweight, but if I want to be top ten and compete for the title, it needs to be at middleweight…it benefits me to be the bigger, stronger individual when people are trying to neutralize me against the cage and on the ground.”

Stann (12-5) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Michael Bisping in September, after stopping Alessio Sakara in the opening round at a UFC on FUEL card last April.

The 32 year-old Stann agreed to move up to face Silva at light-heavyweight, after the latter requested a bout at 205 pounds, rather than cut to middleweight once again.

The 36 year-old Silva, who is coming off a UD loss to Rich Franklin last June, has reportedly expressed in an interest in staying at light-heavyweight from now on.

UFC on FUEL TV 8 takes place this Saturday at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
