Although Matt Brown dropped a clear cut, loss to Johny Hendricks at UFC 185, the welterweight contender still believes he can become a world champ.

Brown was outwrestled and outscored by Hendricks last weekend, and lost the highly anticipated bout via unanimous decision. The defeat was Brown’s second in a row, as last July, he was decisioned by now reigning champ, Robbie Lawler.

The 34 year-old appeared on the “Great MMA Debate” podcast recently, and while discussing his most recent defeat, Brown stated (quote via FOX Sports):

“I just fought the two previous champions and I know where I’m at.  I’m honest enough person if that really, truly say if that wasn’t the case.  I’d sit here and say ‘I cannot be champion, I’m going to fight for fun because I f—ing just love fighting and I’m going to go out there and swing for the fences and get Fight of the Night and go home’.  That’s something I wouldn’t care doing that until I’m 40 years old.  But I know I can be champion.”

Prior to the defeats, Brown worked his way into title contention by putting together a seven fight, winning streak. During the impressive run the Ohio fighter scored six finishes and defeated established vets like Jordan Mein, Mike Swick and Erick Silva.

Brown’s overalll record is currently 19-13.
