Report: Eddie Alvarez Will Not Fight at UFC 159 After Judge’s Ruling

Former Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez will not compete at the upcoming, April 27th, UFC 159 card in Newark, New Jersey, after a judge reportedly ruled today against an injunction that would have cleared him to compete at the event. Where Alvarez will eventually end up competing, however, still remains to be seen.

Today’s ruling is part of the ongoing legal battle between Alvarez and Bellator, which is debating whether the promotion’s latest contract offer to the free agent matches the value of the agreement that the UFC has tabled.

According to a report from MMA Fighting, representatives for Alvarez argued that preventing the fighter from competing at UFC 159 would irreparably damage the fighter’s career.  Although U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares did not find that the evidence supported that argument, he did reportedly note that a jury or judge might conclude that Bellator’s broadcasting deal with SPIKE, may be less valuable to the fighter then the UFC’s partnership with FOX.

Alvarez hasn’t competed since October, when he knocked out Patricky Freire in the first round, in what was the final bout on his Bellator contract.
