Report: Jose Aldo Argues UFC Has Given Conor McGregor “Too Much Power”

Jose Aldo

The UFC has made a big exception in allowing featherweight champ Conor McGregor to challenge for the lightweight crown, and Jose Aldo believes it’s an indication that the promotion has given his rival too much power.

Recently the UFC confirmed that McGregor will face lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos on March 5th, and that he will not relinquish the 145 title to do so. In the past UFC President Dana White dismissed the idea of having a fighter potentially holding belts in more than one division, due to the potential scheduling challenges. Following McGregor’s KO win over Aldo last month, however, White said that the new champ has committed to staying active and as a result, they’ve changed their stance.

Aldo recently spoke with the Brazilian outlet PVT. According to a follow up report from MMA Fighting, Aldo claimed that he and McGregor had reached an agreement with the UFC that the winner of their fight would move to 155. But, according to Aldo, the victor was to vacate the 145 belt.

Then the Brazilian star also reportedly offered this:

“I think they gave him too much power, let him grow a lot, and he’s playing now, calling the shots more than the others,” Aldo said. “I think that’s wrong, no one ever did that. It doesn’t matter if it’s about money or not at this point, what matters is show who calls the shots, who’s the boss, and not just a piece of s–t talking about things you see. He doesn’t deserve to be where he is. I’ve always respected all the merits, but he had more luck than merits.”

The former champ also relayed in the interview that the only fight he’ll accept is if it involves a title. Prior to facing McGregor, Aldo defended the featherweight belt nine times with the WEC and UFC.
