Report: Junior dos Santos Calling For Immediate Rubber Match With Cain Velasquez

Junior dos Santos

By FCF Staff

Despite suffering a one sided, unanimous decision defeat to Cain Velasquez at UFC 155, Junior dos Santos is reportedly looking to fight the newly crowned heavyweight champion as soon as possible. The bout would of course mark the third time dos Santos and Velasquez would fight, as dos Santos stopped the reigning champion in the first round last November.

Dos Santos relayed his wish to fight Velasquez next to MMA Junkie by saying “I can’t wait to come back and fight again. I want to fight with him again. I won a fight. He won the other one. Now we have to have the third fight, the rematch.”

So far, however, UFC President Dana White appears to be lukewarm to the idea of the two heavyweights meeting again anytime soon. After UFC 155 White was understandably asked about the prospect of a rubber match, and while the promoter agreed it would be an interesting fight, he stated that dos Santos will need some time to recover from the clear cut loss.

Of course, the UFC could be waiting to see how former Strikeforce and DREAM champion Alistair Overeem does against Antonio Silva in February, as a bout between the feared striker and Velasquez would also be a huge draw.
