There has been considerable talk and speculation in recents weeks if MMA will finally see the creation of a fighter union, and another group has stepped forward in this effort.

The Professional Fighters Association (PFA) has been created with the goal of creating a fighter union, via the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), according to a report from MMA Fighting.com. The association recently sent out a press release and reportedly announced it is headed by baseball agent Jeff Borris, labor lawyer Lucas Middlebrook and the economist Andrew Zimbalist.

According to the report, the PFA has received support from other player associations like the MLBPA, NFLPA, NHLPA, and NBAPA. The press release also reportedly included this statement from NHLPA director, Donald Fehr:

“I have been privileged to represent elite athletes for nearly 40 years, and believe now more than ever in the benefits of collective bargaining to secure and enhance terms and conditions of employment,” said Donald Fehr. “That is why I fully support and encourage efforts of the fighters to organize a union to represent them.”

The group’s formation comes not long after UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt began campaigning for a fighter union.

The PFA isn’t the only group, however, attempting to form a fighter union.  The MMA Fighters Association (MMAFA), which is being spearheaded by Rob Maysey, has received the endorsement of veteran fighters like Cung Le and Randy Couture.

Recently the UFC was reportedly sold for approximately $4 billion, which prompted several fighters to call for higher compensation.
