Report: UFC FN 43’s Nate Marquardt Says “Training Was Suffering” as Welterweight

While some fighters enjoy success after dropping down to a new weight class, Nate Marquardt had to learn the hard way that competing at welterweight wasn’t right for him.

In 2011, Marquardt left the middleweight division to fight at 170, but after going 2-3 in the new weight class, he returned to 185 at UFC FN 43.

Following his submission win over James Te Huna, here is some of what the 35 year-old had to say about cutting to 170 (quote via MMA Junkie.com):

“My training was suffering because of the diet,” Marquardt said. “I wasn’t getting the right training. I wasn’t able to recover from workouts, and I definitely think the cut the week of the fight was affecting me in the fight.”

Marquardt, who had lost three straight fights heading into UFC FN 43,  went on to add that he believes he’s “supposed to be” at 185.

UFC FN 43 was hosted by the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.
