Following his knockout loss to Josh Koscheck last September, former UFC welterweight champ Matt Hughes announced that he was taking a break from the sport, rather than outright retiring. In a recent interview over one year later, however, Hughes is reporting that his storied career is likely over.

While speaking to the Iowa publication, the Daily Gate City recently, Hughes stated:

“I’ve not announced my retirement, but right now it looks like I’m fully retired,” Hughes said in the story. “The UFC still treats me well so I can be retired. It’s just funny, when God puts you on a road, you don’t know where you are going. I have all the faith that he put me there, and I have to thank him from that.”

Prior to the loss to Koscheck, Hughes was KO’d by former champ BJ Penn, which ended a three fight winning streak for the noted wrestler.

The 39 year-old Hughes, who won the UFC welterweight championship twice, carries a record of 45-9.

During his time in the Octagon, Hughes scored wins over established fighters like Georges St. Pierre, Matt Serra, BJ Penn, Sean Sherk and Hayato Sakurai among others.
