If John Lineker had scored an emphatic, clear cut victory over Ian McCall at UFC Fight Night 56, the flyweight may have been next in line for a title shot. McCall, however, fell ill and was unable to fight, but Lineker is gunning for a bout with champion Demetrious Johnson anyways.

Linker, who is currently ranked #6 in the UFC’s flyweight division, has gone 4-1 in his last five fights and has scored stoppage wins in all four of the victories.

While speaking to the media after his fight with McCall was cancelled last minute, Lineker relayed (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“Since I wanted to fight (McCall) and ask for a shot at the title, why can’t I just go ahead and fight the champion?” Lineker asked. “UFC, please, give me this opportunity. I have evolved a lot since my first fight in the UFC, and I’m 100 percent ready to fight for the title.”

McCall was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a reported blood infection. The American is currently ranked #3 in the UFC’s 125 pound division.

Johnson is coming off a submission victory over Chris Cariaso and currently isn’t booked for his next bout.
