Report: Vitor Belfort Says he Fought Chris Weidman With Injured Shoulder

Belfort

Vitor Belfort lasted less than one round against Chris Weidman at UFC 187, and now the contender has revealed he faced the middleweight champ with an injured shoulder.

Belfort managed to stun Weidman early on, and cut the champion during the follow up flurry, but was quickly taken down. From there, Weidman punished Belfort with strikes from above and brought about the stoppage victory.

Well, recently Belfort held a press conference in his native Brazil, and according to a report from AG Fight, he relayed the following (translation via MMA Fighting.com):

“I spent too much energy there,” Belfort said while discussing the opening moments of the bout. “If I took one step back, waited a little bit, I would have knocked him out. I’m sure I would have knocked him out. But I started to punch with the left hand, didn’t punch too much with the right hand because I dislocated my shoulder, so I wouldn’t be able to throw hard punches. That was his moment. He’s really tough on the ground.”

The 38 year-old, who had won three straight prior to the loss, reportedly will not require surgery to repair his shoulder.

UFC 187 was hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 23rd.
