It remains to be seen who Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will fight next, but according to a new report, the UFC’s #2 ranked middleweight has expressed some interest in facing rising contender, Yoel Romero.

Souza is coming off a third round, submission win over Gegard Mousasi in September, but since champion Chris Weidman won’t fight Vitor Belfort until early next year, “Jacare” will likely fight in the interim.

In the latest edition of FOX Sports 1’s “UFC Tonight”, the show’s Ariel Helwani reported that he asked Romero’s manager if they would be interested in facing Souza. The answer was reportedly yes. The manager relayed that they are hoping for a fight with a top five ranked 185’er in early 2015.

Souza apparently also said he would be interested in facing the decorated wrestler, provided the fight determined the division’s #1 contender. The 34 year-old jiu-jitsu champion has won 7 fights in a row.

Romero has won five straight fights in the UFC, and most recently, he stopped fellow contender Tim Kennedy in the third round. The win wasn’t without controversy, however, as Romero was given extra time in between rounds two and three. The middleweight appeared to be badly stunned as the second frame ended.

The 37 year-old Romero is currently ranked #6 in the UFC’s middleweight division.
