Unless something changes in the coming months, it looks like the UFC’s #1 ranked welterweight plans on testing the free agent market.

That welterweight is Rory MacDonald, who is scheduled to fight Stephen Thompson on June 18th in Ottawa, Ontario. Recently MacDonald appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and he reported that the upcoming bout is the last on his current contract. The Canadian also revealed that he’s been in negotiations with the UFC regarding a new deal, but so far, nothing has been signed.

While discussing his future and pending free agent status, the 26 year-old fighter stated the following (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“I want to make the most money I can. I want to get paid for what I bring to the table,” MacDonald said. “I’ve sacrificed a lot to get to the top, to the world title. I really sacrificed, and I took a lot of chances. I did a lot of favors, I felt like, for the UFC and I don’t think it got returned. So now it’s all about making money, and whoever wants to pay me the most is where I’ll go.”

MacDonald hasn’t fought since last July, when he was stopped by reigning welterweight champ Robbie Lawler in round five. The bout was widely considered to be one of the year’s best fights. The only man who has defeated MacDonald since 2010 is Lawler.
