Tom Watson vs. Frank Trigg Confirmed for BAMMA 7

By FCF Staff

As expected, The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts has announced today that UFC veteran Frank Trigg will challenge middleweight champion Tom Watson for his title at the promotion’s upcoming, September 10th event in Birmingham, England. (Pictured: Watson punching Murilo Rua)

In addition to confirming the main event for BAMMA 7, the promotion has also announced that Joey Villasenor will drop to welterweight to face Che Mills.

BAMMA 7 will be hosted by Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena.

Watson (14-4) is coming off an impressive, third round knockout of Murilo “Ninja” Rua at BAMMA 6 in May after working his way to a unanimous decision victory over Alex Reid in September.

Trigg (21-8) also competed at BAMMA 6 and overwhelmed John Phillips in the first round with ground-and-pound strikes for the TKO, stoppage due to cuts, win. Prior to that, Trigg scored another first round stoppage victory over Roy Neeman at the Israel Fighting Championship in September.

“Watson said he was open to fighting Trigg if the fans were interested in the match-up …and the fans were definitely interested,” Liam Fisher, Head of Business Development at BAMMA, said in the announcement. “The fans wanted it, so we made it happen. After Trigg’s impressive performance against John Phillips and Tom sending Ninja Rua into retirement, this is going to be a very interesting fight to watch.”

Villlasenor (27-8-1) fought to a draw with Chris Camozzi in his last outing at Shark Fights 15 in May. The veteran is winless in three fights.

Mills (13-4) is riding a four fight win streak and is coming off a first round knock-out victory over Marcio Cesar at BAMMA 6.

Some of the other bouts scheduled for BAMMA 7 include lightweight champion Rob Sinclair vs. Leonardo Santos, lightweight Efrain Escudero vs. Tim Radcliffe and middleweight Matt Ewin vs.  Valentino Petrescu .
