Frankie Edgar has accomplished many great things in his fighting career to date, and there’s no question the fighter will always be linked to BJ Penn. After all, not only did he defeat Penn to become lightweight champ in 2010, Edgar has added two more victories over the legend since.

The latest came Sunday night at the TUF 19 Finale, as Edgar went on to stop Penn in the third round. While speaking to FOX Sports 1 about the victory, which prompted Penn to retire, here is what Edgar had to say (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):

“It was bittersweet. He was the man. Pound-for-pound, he was the best. He started the upside of my career giving me that title shot. He’ll always be a part of my career.”

“I wanted to establish the pace. I didn’t know what to expect from BJ. I wasn’t focused on what he did. I focused on what I had to do,” said Edgar, while discussing what led to his third round, TKO victory. “I heard Herb Dean tell him to do something, and I started to pour it on. I felt him fading in the second round. I almost felt bad a little bit. Everyone holds BJ in such high regard, and so do I. But before the fight, BJ kept calling me out and saying he was going to finish me, so I got a little mad.”

With the win, Edgar has gone 2-0 now since he was defeated by featherweight champ Jose Aldo last February. When asked who he would like to fight next, the 145′er stated:

“I see I’m number three. They moved Cub Swanson ahead of me, so it only makes sense fighting the guy ahead of me. I want to fight again before the year is out.”

The TUF 19 Finale was hosted by the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
