TUF 21 Finale: Stephen Thompson Outlines Lessons he Learned From Loss to Matt Brown

There’s an old saying that you learn more from your losses then from your wins, and in the case of Stephen Thompson, that certainly appears to be true.

Thompson is set to fight Jake Ellenberger in the TUF 21 Finale main event on Sunday, in what likely is his biggest fight to date. The welterweight has been awarded a main event slot, thanks to a four fight winning streak, which has followed Thompson’s 2012 loss to Matt Brown.

Recently Thompson (10-1) spoke to UFC.com about his upcoming fight, as well as as what he learned from his decision loss to Brown. Here is some of what the highlight reel striker had to say:

“Oh yeah, I learned a lot during that Matt Brown fight with my weight cut and with my whole ground game,” Thompson said. “I made a lot of changes and really focused on my wrestling defense, which is one of the reasons why I like going to New York to train with (UFC middleweight champion) Chris Weidman. There’s no one at 170 that’s as strong or, in my eyes, as good as Chris Weidman. It’s a big confidence builder with Chris, Matt Serra and Ray Longo at LAW-MMA, and I think I am surprising some people. Hopefully I’ll open up some eyes during this fight as well.”

Most recently in September, “Wonderboy” worked his way to a UD win over rugged vet, Patrick Cote. Ellenberger (30-9), meanwhile, is coming off a submission win over Josh Koscheck in February, which ended a three fight losing skid.

The July 12th, TUF 21 Finale will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
