UFC 136: Edgar Takes Third Tilt With Maynard in Thrilling Fashion; Aldo Retains Crown

Edgar

Gray Maynard’s inability to finish Frankie Edgar was once again his undoing tonight at UFC 136 in Houston, Texas, except this time the UFC Lightweight Champion was able to complete his comeback in an even more impressive and memorable fashion.

In an opening round, which was remarkably similar to the one that began their second tilt back in January, Maynard appeared seconds away from stopping Edgar, as he punished the champion with a right lead uppercut and several hard follow up punches.

Just like at UFC 125, however, Edgar managed to survive Maynard’s onslaught, and by round two the elusive and dynamic fighter was once again landing kicks and punches of his own.

As the fight wore on, Maynard began to slow down while Edgar kept up his attacks, and after Edgar attempted a takedown in round four, he sent Maynard reeling with a follow up punch. As Edgar swarmed in on Maynard against the Octagon fence, several more strikes from the lightweight sent the challenger crashing to the mat. With Maynard face down on the floor and offering no defense, the bout was brought to a stop to complete Edgar’s stunning comeback.

Despite a valiant effort and being able to survive the vaunted striking game of UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo , Kenny Florian once again came up short in his title quest.

Early on, Florian was able to close the distance on Aldo and control or outscore the champion while working for a takedown. As the bout wore on, however, Aldo began to land more leg kicks, get the better of exchanges or work his way into a dominant position when the fight was on the mat.

By the final bell, Aldo had outscored Florian with strikes and inflicted more damage, and was awarded a 49-46 score from all three cageside judge’s.

Chael Sonnen turned to his renowned wrestling skills in his first fight in over one year, and overwhelmed noted striker Brian Stann for approximately eight minutes, before sinking in a fight ending arm-triangle-choke.

After the bout, the outspoken fighter immediately called out middleweight champ Anderson Silva, who tapped Sonnen out with a fifth round, triangle choke last August. Sonnen dared Silva to rematch him on Super Bowl weekend next year, and further added that if he wins, Silva should leave the middleweight division, while if he loses, Sonnen claimed he will leave the UFC.
