UFC 178: Daniel Cormier to Fight Jon Jones Instead of Alexander Gustafsson
By FCF Staff
Alexander Gustafsson will have to wait for another shot at the UFC light-heavyweight title, as the promotion has announced he has withdrawn from his September 27th bout with Jon Jones due to injury.
Stepping in for Gustafsson at UFC 178 will be #2 ranked contender Daniel Cormier.
The nature of Gustafsson’s injury wasn’t disclosed in the official announcement by the UFC; however, according to MMA Fighting.com, the light-heavyweight has torn meniscus in his knee.
Cormier (15-0) has scored wins over Patrick Cummins and Dan Henderson since he dropped down from heavyweight, and the decorated wrestler has gone 4-0 in the Octagon to date.
The champion Jones (20-1) is coming off a decision win over Glover Teixeira, after he defeated Gustafsson by UD in September.
UFC 178 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
