After establishing himself as one of the sport’s top lightweights, without fighting in the Octagon, Eddie Alvarez will continue his pursuit of the world’s number one ranking this Saturday at UFC 178.

The former Bellator champ and #14 ranked lightweight will battle the #5 positioned Donald Cerrone at the event, in a pivotal fight for both men. Recently, Alvarez spoke with UFC.com about his decorated career and aspirations, and offered this look at his mindset:

“I have a saying on my phone, it says ‘success is never owned, it’s just rented, and the rent is due every single day,’” Alvarez said. “Regardless of how successful I ever am, it’s only a byproduct of what I do every day, and if I stop doing that, it will slip from my grip. I understand that, I believe that, and that’s a reality to me because I’ve been there in my career. That keeps me on my toes, it keeps me waking up early in the morning and going to bed late at night, just thinking about how I can beat these guys in front of me. That keeps me hungry. I’m not number one yet, so I’m gonna be uneasy until I am, and I’ll probably still be uneasy and make different goals when that time does come.”

Alvarez (25-3) will be fighting for the first time since last November when he decisioned Michael Chandler to regain Bellator’s lightweight title. The only man to defeat the 30 year-old in his last 10 fights is the latter.

UFC 178 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and will include a flyweight title fight between champion Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso.
