Fabricio Werdum has shaken the MMA world tonight in Mexico City, as the heavyweight ended the reign of Cain Velasquez at UFC 188.

Velasquez pressured Werdum throughout the bout and continued to move forward, however, the latter battered him with jabs and punches. While Velasquez also landed plenty of telling shots, as round three began, he was cut above both eyes and was clearly tired.

Not long into round three, Velasquez shot in on Werdum, but found himself ensnared in a fight ending, guillotine choke. With the victory, Werdum became the undisputed, heavyweight champ.

In the co-headliner, Eddie Alvarez battled through a nearly shut left eye to outscore Gilbert Melendez for the win. Melendez rocked Alvarez early on with a standing elbow, and after the latter made the mistake of blowing his nose, his left eye was almost completely closed.

Alvarez turned to his wrestling, however, and managed to work his way to a gutsy, split decision win.
