UFC 189: Tim Means “Couldn’t be Happier” About Recent Run And Facing Matt Brown Next

Tim Means

By Kelsey Mowatt

Tim Means continued to impress at UFC on FOX 15, and after the surging welterweight tapped out George Sullivan at the event, the promotion moved quickly to reward “The Dirty Bird”.

Not long after the win, the promotion announced that Means will battle Matt Brown at UFC 189 on July 11th. In booking the former lightweight for the fight, they’ve provided Means an opportunity to defeat the #5th ranked Brown, and catapult him up the welterweight ranks.

“I’m happy that these guys have me on their speed dial,” Means relayed on Full Contact Fighter Radio recently, while referring to the fact he was called to step in for Kenny Robertson at UFC on FOX 15, and that Brown was initially expected to fight Nate Diaz next. “They have me in mind to get me fights and to keep me busy. They’re matching me up with these awesome fights that are really good for my style.”

“I couldn’t be happier with what’s going on with the UFC and my coaching staff,” Means furthered. “Coach Tom (Vaughn) and my team at FIT (NHB)…”

When the bout was announced, chances are fans who are familiar with both fighters, were extremely happy with the news. Brown, of course, has become a fan favourite due to his relentless approach and ability to finish fights. Before Brown was decisioned by champion Robbie Lawler and former champ Johny Hendricks in consecutive fights, “The Immortal” had won seven in a row and had scored stoppages in six of them.

Means, meanwhile, has also showcased a diverse and dangerous striking game since he arrived in the UFC. In his most recent win over Sullivan, the 31 year-old fighter put away his opponent with a nicely timed, arm-triangle-choke in round three.

“Guys seem to follow him to the ground after they hurt him and tie him up, where it’s really his strong suit,” said Means, when asked if he’s noticed any chinks in Brown’s armor. “So, I think I punish the body very well and I have ways of finding the liver and stuff, so if it were anything it would be that.”

“He has ways of staying in the fight…” furthered Means. “His heart; his eternal heart. His cardio is good, his recovery is good, so I’m expecting an absolute war and a guy like Brown to want to come and just hurt me. There’s not going to be any time to think, I’m just going to have to react, and I feel like I fight a lot better when guys are coming right at me and trying to put me down….Your autopilot takes over and you do what you do at the gym.”

UFC 189 will be hosted by MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and in the main event, featherweight champ Jose Aldo will take on Conor McGregor.

The card will also feature welterweight champ Robbie Lawler taking on Johny Hendricks.
