UFC 194: Dana White Says Conor McGregor Will Receive Title Shot at 155, Latter Discusses “Nice Options”

Conor McGregor unified the featherweight titles last night in jaw dropping fashion, but it looks like more than ever, that a move to lightweight is imminent.

McGregor ended Jose Aldo’s storied run as the featherweight champ at UFC 194, by knocking him out cold, in just 13 seconds. McGregor has said for months that he plans to move up to the lightweight division, but also expressed an interest in fighting Frankie Edgar. The latter secured another shot at the 145 belt on Friday, by stopping Chad Mendes.

Following last night’s card, UFC President Dana White was asked about whether McGregor will face Edgar next, and he told FOX Sports the following (quotes via press release):

“It’s a great fight. Conor’s coach John Kavanaugh said Conor won’t make 145 again and they’re talking about going to 155. Maybe he’ll want to fight Frankie. You never know with Conor.”

“I’d bring him straight for a title fight,” White noted, before referring to next Saturday’s bout between lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone . “Conor would meet the winner of next week’s fight if he moves up.”

While Kavanaugh reportedly told White that McGregor can’t cut to 145 any longer, when the champ was asked about his future, he said this:

“I’d like to go up for the 155 pound belt. I don’t look the freshest at the weigh-in, but nobody does. I respect how Frankie got that win. I’ll meet with Lorenzo and discuss it. I like Frankie. He fights with his heart. But he wouldn’t take my shots. I’d like Croke Park and Frankie there if the UFC want it. I respect him. There’s lots of nice options so then we can make decisions. It’d be beautiful.”

Croke Park is a 80,000 plus seat stadium in Dublin, Ireland. McGregor has been calling for an event in the venue for some time now, and the UFC has said it plans to meet his request.

UFC 194 took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
