Robbie Lawler says continuing to evolve as a fighter and adding new techniques to his arsenal, is a key reason for his impressive, championship run.

Since Lawler returned to the UFC in 2013, the powerful fighter has gone 8-1, won the welterweight title, and defended the belt twice. On Saturday, Lawler will take on Tyron Woodley in the headliner of UFC 201. Recently the champion spoke to UFC.com in advance of the fight, and while discussing his recent success, the 34 year-old stated:

“When I came back to the UFC in this last run, I think every fight I’ve added new pieces to my game and new techniques that have worked immediately, so it’s just one thing after another and just trying to be the best fighter you can be and be better than the guy you were yesterday. So that’s what I constantly try to do,” Lawler said.

“It’s just one of those things where I was always trying to figure it out – trying to get stronger, trying to get a little quicker, trying to get better with my techniques. It’s just slowly evolved and my coaches now are bringing in some of the old stuff I used to do back into the mix and adding some new tricks. It’s just always constantly evolving and trying to get better. Right now I’m just bringing it all together.”

Lawler will be fighting for the first time since January, when he earned a split decision win over Carlos Condit.

UFC 201 will take place in Atlanta, Georgia.
