UFC 202: Glover Teixeira Says he Didn’t Want to Disrespect Anthony Johnson by Trying to “Jump The Line”

After Glover Teixeira quickly took out Rashad Evans in April, the heavy handed fighter called for a bout with Anthony Johnson, because he didn’t want to be “disrespectful” to the light-heavyweight contender.

The win over Evans was Teixeira’s third in a row, and ensured that the latter remained a top five ranked, 205’er. Teixeira, however, proceeded to call for a bout with Johnson, rather than a fight with the reigning champ, Daniel Cormier.

Well, the two have been booked to fight this Saturday at UFC 202, in what will be the card’s co-main event. Recently Teixeira (25-4) told UFC.com the following, while discussing why he campaigned for a bout with “Rumble”.

“Anthony Johnson is a fight that makes sense for me, business wise,” Teixeira said. “He’s in line for the title, and of course I would like to call Cormier before Anthony Johnson, but I think that would be more disrespectful toward Anthony Johnson, me trying to jump the line. Anthony Johnson is ahead of me in the line and me calling him to fight is to prove who the guy is who is next in line. I knew the guy (Johnson) wasn’t going to fight for the title for a while, so it’s a fight that makes sense. We fight and we see who gets a title shot next. I know I have to pass through Anthony Johnson before I fight for the title.”

Johnson (21-5), meanwhile, stopped Ryan Bader in his outing, which took place in January.

UFC 202 will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
