UFC 206: Anthony Pettis Says he Wasn’t “That Guy” in Recent Defeats

Although Anthony Pettis was successful in his featherweight debut and will fight for the interim belt at UFC 206, “Showtime” is still fielding questions about what went wrong in his last few bouts at 155.

It wasn’t long ago when Pettis was widely considered to be one of the planet’s best pound-for-pound contenders. But after losing the lightweight title to Rafael dos Anjos last March, Pettis dropped two more bouts to Edson Barboza and Eddie Alvarez. As a result, Pettis decided to drop down to featherweight, and in August, he submitted Charles Oliveira.

Recently Pettis spoke with UFC.com, and while discussing what went wrong in his final bouts as a lightweight, the 29 year-old stated:

“You know what, I’ve been sitting down with my coaches and everybody trying to figure that out and the more I think about it, the more it gets into my head, so I stopped thinking about it,” Pettis said. “I lost the fights, and the stuff I did wrong I did to myself. I was tentative, I wasn’t taking risks, and I just wasn’t ‘that’ guy. To be that guy again, I’ve got to build a winning streak. The UFC’s giving me a path to build a winning streak and a title shot at the same time, so I’m gonna take full advantage of it and I have nothing to lose in the situation.”

Holloway, meanwhile, has won nine straight bouts heading into UFC 206. Saturday’s card will take place in Toronto, Ontario.
