UFC 210: Chris Weidman’s Coach Believes Team May Have “Plateaued a Little Bit Before”

Following back-to-back losses for Chris Weidman, one of the former middleweight champ’s coaches has admitted that the fighter and his team may have “plateaued a little bit” in the past year or so.

It wasn’t long ago when Weidman was an undefeated fighter and the reigning 185 champ. But, in December, 2015, the decorated wrestler was stopped by Luke Rockhold. The “All American” didn’t return to the cage until last November, due to injuries, but Weidman was finished by Yoel Romero at UFC 205.

This Saturday at UFC 210, Weidman will look to get back on track when he faces fellow contender, Gegard Mousasi. Recently Weidman’s striking coach, Ray Longo, was a guest on “The MMA Hour”. While discussing Weidman’s recent setbacks, Longo had this to say (quote via MMA Fighting):

If you think about it, there was only one way to go,” Longo said. “You can’t keep going up and up and up. So we plateaued a little bit before. I think that’s going to be the mantra. That’s behind us, and we really had to go back to what got us there and really just move forward.”

“I mean, life throws a lot of things at you,” Longo added. “You have family, you’ve got kids, you’ve got all this stuff happening outside and you know, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. So you want guys to entertain things that they could be successful in maybe after their career is over. But again, the mantra for this was really just exclude — just focus on what you have to do.”

Mousasi, on the other hand, has won four straight bouts as UFC 210 approaches. The April 8th card will take place in Buffalo, New York.
