Tony Ferguson plans to become the undisputed lightweight champ at UFC 223, and then advance to a battle with former welterweight champ, Georges St-Pierre.

Leading up to Ferguson’s April 7th bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov, the expectation is that the winner will move on and fight Conor McGregor next. But, recently Ferguson had this to say about the lightweight champ, who will likely be stripped of the 155 title soon (quote via MMA Junkie):

“If you have to hype it up, and you want to come back because that’s the sport and the athlete in you – the guy that I met at Paradigm Sports when I shook his hand and I said, ‘You better stay at 145 because at ’55, we’re going to have problems,’ he’s nowhere to be found. Straight up. So, if he wants to come back, that’s great. But my concern is not him – it’s the next person in line.”

“GSP,” Ferguson said, when asked who he hopes to face after UFC 223. “I mean, that’s what I signed up for in the beginning. I was 170 pounds; 155 was forced on me. One hundred and seventy pounds, where I have 12 fights.”

St-Pierre won the middleweight title in November, by choking out Michael Bisping, but vacated the belt as a result of being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. The decorated fighter isn’t certain when he’ll fight again.

UFC 223 will be hosted by Brooklyn, New York.
