The UFC has confirmed that Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis will battle for the interim featherweight title on December 10th, and that Conor McGregor has “relinquished” the 145 belt.

As a result, Jose Aldo, who was the interim champ, is once again the undisputed featherweight champion.

The confirmation came after MMA Fighting.com reported Holloway – Pettis was going to be a battle for the interim title. It wasn’t clear at the time, however, whether McGregor would be stripped of the featherweight belt, or if he was going to vacate it. In the past, McGregor has always stopped short of saying he’d vacate a title if he was champion in two divisions. The lightweight champ has repeatedly said he likes to stay active, and that he didn’t believe defending two belts would be an issue.

In a follow up report from MMA Fighting, however, it states sources have told the outlet that McGregor never agreed to relinquish a title. The promotion does have the legal right to strip the Irish star of the belt.

In the official UFC announcement regarding Holloway – Pettis, it stated this about McGregor:

The UFC announced the new main event on Saturday, also revealing that Jose Aldo is the promotion’s new undisputed featherweight champion after two-division titleholder Conor McGregor relinquished the 145-pound belt and decided to focus on the title he holds in the 155-pound lightweight division.

The winner of Holloway vs. Pettis will face Aldo in 2017.

Holloway – Pettis will headline UFC 206, which will take place in Toronto, Ontario.
