UFC Confirms Diego Sanchez vs. Matt Hughes for Sept. 24th

By FCF Staff

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has confirmed that former welterweight champion Matt Hughes (pictured) will take on fellow veteran Diego Sanchez at the promotion’s upcoming September 24th event in Denver, Colorado. UFC 135 will be hosted by the city’s Pepsi Center. The promotion had previously announced that the match-up had been verbally agreed to but no date was initially confirmed.

Hughes (45-8) will be looking to rebound from a first round, knock-out loss at the hands of BJ Penn last November, which ended the decorated fighter’s three fight win streak. Heading into the UFC 123 bout the 37 year-old fighter had scored wins over Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie and Ricardo Almeida.

Sanchez (23-4) is coming off a closely contested, unanimous decision win over Martin Kampmann at UFC Live 3 in March, after working his way to a UD win over Paulo Thiago at UFC 121 in October. The former lightweight is 3-2 in his last five fights, with an additional win coming over Clay Guida and losses incurred while facing BJ Penn and John Hathaway.

UFC 135 will be headlined a light-heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and former champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
