UFC Fight Night 29: Rousimar Palhares Drop to Welterweight Official, Fighting Mike Pierce
By Timothy Gilbert
Former middleweight Rousimar Palhares has confirmed his potential weight cut and will officially face off against Mike Pierce at UFC Fight Night 29. The 33-year-old, 19-fight veteran will make his first welterweight appearance in his native Brazil.
Palhares (14-5) experienced trouble at middleweight as of late, getting knocked out in the first round of his last two matches against Alan Belcher and Hector Lombard. Prior to his recent setbacks,“Toquinho” was on a three fight win streak, going 12-2 over his 14 prior matches. Palhares has submitted his opponents in 10 of his 14 total victories. It appears the stocky former middleweight couldn’t hang with the ever-improving 185 pound competition, and will use the weight cut to face off against opponents of a more proportionate size.
He will face off against Mike Pierce (17-5), who is on a 4-fight win streak and 5-1 in his last six matches. He has gone 8-2 since 2010, with his only losses coming from long time title contenders Josh Koscheck and Johny Hendricks. Pierce has won just under half of his matches (8) by knockout and has yet to be finished in his six year professional career.
UFC Fight Night 29 will take place at Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil on Wednesday, October 9. The main card is set to air on FOX Sports 1.
