UFC FN 101: Jake Matthews Outlines How he’s Learned From His Defeats

Jake Matthews

Jake Matthews will look to get back on track this weekend against Andrew Holbrook, but the Australian fighter believes he’s a better fighter, thanks to his recent defeat.

Matthews will face Holbrook at UFC FN 101, which will take place in Melbourne, Australia. The bout will mark the first time the 22 year-old has fought, since he was stopped by Kevin Lee in July.

Recently “The Celtic Kid” spoke to UFC.com about the upcoming bout, and his setbacks, and Matthews said this:

“You learn from every loss; that’s the beauty of MMA,” said Matthews, whose only other defeat came in 2015, when he was submitted by James Vick. “You often learn more about yourself in those 15 minutes than you could in a whole year otherwise.”

“The first one against James Vick was just about not getting cocky, not letting the hype or being on the main card get to me. The next fight, against Kevin Lee, we went in thinking he was going to stand up and strike with me, but as soon as the fight started, he was going in for the takedown non-stop, so we learned to have an open mind when you go into a fight. Don’t have a set idea of what they’re going to do because it could change.”

In Matthews’ other 2016 bout this past March, he submitted Johnny Case in round three.
