Rory MacDonald has been working his way to the top of the UFC’s welterweight rankings for sometime now, but in the past, each win prompted more questions about whether he’d fight his teammate and friend, Georges St. Pierre. Now that the latter has stepped away from the UFC title, and fighting for the time being, however, MacDonald can focus on his title shot run.

MacDonald, who is set to fight Tarec Saffiedine at UFC Fight Night 54 on Saturday, appeared on the latest edition of “UFC Tonight.” When asked what fighting is like, removed from the shadow of GSP, the 25 year-old stated (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):

“It’s a little bit of freedom. Now there’s no stress between me and my goal. The only thing stopping me is myself. I have to go out there and win the fights that get me there.”

“Ares” was also asked what he believes a win over the former Strikeforce champ will get him, and the Canadian responded:

“This is the fight that really sticks me in there as the number-one contender. I have to get through Tarec and he’s a dangerous guy.”

MacDonald (17-2) is coming off a unanimous decision win over Tyron Woodley in June, and Saffiedine (15-3) hasn’t fought since January, when he decisioned Hyun Gyu Lim.

UFC FN 54 will be hosted by the Halifax Forum, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
