UFC FN 56: “Shogun” Rua Says Ovince St. Preux Presents “Totally Different Fight” Than Jimi Manuwa

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua

Up until a few days ago, “Shogun” Rua was scheduled to fight Jimi Manuwa at UFC Fight Night 56 this week, until the latter broke his foot and had to withdraw.

Now, Rua has been handed the task of facing Ovince St. Preux, who has showcased dangerous finishing skills on the ground in recent outings. Manuwa, on the other hand, has forged a reputation for being more of a punishing striker.

Rua recently spoke to UFC.com about the upcoming bout, and while discussing the differences between Manuwa and “OSP”, he relayed:

“Saint Preux fights in a southpaw stance, is taller, and has a different set of skills,” Rua said. “It’s a totally different fight in many ways, and we had to come up with a new strategy right away, and have to use the few days of training that we had left to work on it, and tweak some things during fight week while focusing on the final weight cut. In the end, a fight is a fight and being in a main event is a privilege and a responsibility. I’m glad that the fight is on so the fans can see us fight. I would never let them down, and I’ll do my best regardless of the opponent.”

St.Preux had won five straight fights, prior to being decisioned by Ryan Bader in August, and recorded KO’s or submissions in four of them.

Rua, meanwhile, is looking to recover from the stoppage loss he suffered versus Dan Henderson in March, after KO’ing James Te Huna in December.

UFC FN 56 will take place in Uberlandia, Brazil, on Saturday night.
