Ray Borg will kick off his 2015 campaign on Saturday night, when he takes on Chris Kelades at UFC Fight Night 60. A lot has changed for Borg over the last year, as thanks to what he’s showcased in the Octagon so far, many believe the 21 year-old is one of the promotion’s top flyweight prospects.

“2014 was great for me. I went from being dead broke, back against the wall, thinking to myself whether or not I have a legitimate shot in the sport, to being on the biggest stage that the sport can get,” Borg relayed on a recent episode of Full Contact Fighter Radio. “Doing very well, and competing with a top ranked fighter, who in my opinion I beat.”

Borg is referring to the UFC’s #12th ranked Dustin Ortiz, who the FIT NHB fighter faced in his promotional debut. Borg ended up losing the tightly contested bout via split decision, but went on to choke out Shane Howell a few months later in June.

“It was really good for me 2014,” added Borg, who currently holds a pro record of 7-1. “I’m looking more forward to 2015 and what it has to offer.”

Kelades also impressed in his UFC debut, but in his case, he emerged with the win. The 33 year-old agreed to fight Patrick Holohan on short notice at UFC FN 54 last October, and Kelades scored a unanimous decision victory. The bout marked the first time Holohan had been defeated in 11 pro bouts.

“Ya. I saw that fight. It was a scrap man,” Borg said, when asked if he watched the Fit Plus fighter’s UFC debut. “Those guys were going at it. I felt like Holohan had the upper hand until he started to gas out a little bit, and then Chris Kelades did a good job on capitalizing on those openings, and dominated the rest of the fight. I think he’s a tough opponent, but not nearly as tough as I’ve faced,” Borg furthered. “I’m ready for February 14th to hurry up and be here.”

Borg admitted that he’s had a tough time finding additional footage of Kelades (8-1), but noted that he’s not a big fan of watching his opponent’s previous fights.

“I trust in my coaches Tom Vaughn, Jon Judy and Arlene Sanchez to go ahead and make the adjustments that they feel like I need to make for my opponent,” said Borg. “But, like I said, I watched the Patrick Holohan fight and I felt like he’s a real, gritty fighter. He’s not down to quit at all. So I feel like that’s something that’s going to have to be overcome. I’ve fought fighters with that kind of will before and have still broken them, so that’s the same thing I’m going to look to do to Chris Kelades February 14th.”

UFC FN 60 will be hosted by the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. In the main event, former lightweight champ Benson Henderson will take on welterweight Brandon Thatch.
