UFC FN 62: Demian Maia Taking “One Step at a Time” Heading Into Pivotal Fight

By FCF Staff

Demian Maia could take a step closer to the title shot race if he defeats fellow, welterweight contender Ryan LaFlare tonight at UFC FN 62, but the established vet isn’t thinking about that right now.

The heralded grappler and former middleweight challenger hasn’t fought since last May, when he scored a unanimous decision win over Alexander Yakovlev. But, following the victory, the 37 year-old was sidelined with a serious bone infection. Thus, this likely one of the reasons why Maia recently told UFC.com the following, while discussing what could follow UFC FN 62.

“I can’t really think of that,” Maia said. “He (LaFlare) is a very tough fighter, and I know this is will be a very tough fight for both of us. We were training for a three-round fight, and we were lucky enough to be bumped up to a main event and suddenly it became a five-round fight, and it’s a big deal for both of us. The division is stacked and any of the top 15 guys can beat each other on a good night. So first, I have to win against LaFlare, and then I can see where this takes me. One step at a time.”

Maia is currently ranked #7 in the UFC’s welterweight division, and the Brazilian has gone 3-2 in his last 5 bouts. LaFlare, meanwhile, is positioned at #14, after going 4-0 in UFC action.

UFC FN 62 will be hosted by Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
