UFC FN 63: Ricardo Lamas Says Winner of Tomorrow’s Headliner “Deserves a Title Shot”

Lamas

By FCF Staff

Ricardo Lamas will take on Chad Mendes at UFC Fight Night 63 tomorrow, and although both men are coming off recent losses to featherweight champ Jose Aldo, he contends the winner should get another crack at the title.

Mendes faced Aldo in October, for a second time, and was decisioned by the renowned fighter. Lamas, on the other hand, fought the champion last February and also lost by unanimous decision. But, as Lamas alluded to in a recent interview with UFC.com, both he and Mendes remain top contenders. Mendes is currently ranked #1, and Lamas is sitting at #4.

“He’s at the top of the division right now; the only one above him is Aldo,” Lamas says. “He is ranked as No. 1 out of all the contenders, so besides a title fight, this is the very best fight I can have, so I’m going to take advantage. This is going to be the true No. 1 contender fight.

“My only loss in the featherweight division is to Jose Aldo. Chad’s only losses in the featherweight division are to Jose Aldo. We’re two of the top guys in the division and the winner of this fight deserves a title shot again.”

The division’s #2 contender, Frankie Edgar, is scheduled to fight Urijah Faber on May 16th, but like the others, he also has a loss to Aldo.

Of course, if Aldo is defeated by Conor McGregor at UFC 189 on July 11th, then one would think the UFC’s match making decisions will become a little bit easier. “Notorious” has not fought any of the top five ranked contenders.

UFC FN 63 will be hosted by the Patriot Center in Newark, New Jersey.
