UFC FN 77: Dan Henderson Believes Vitor Belfort Was “Abusing Something” During 2013 Run

Vitor Belfort has repeatedly said that he always attempted to abide by the rules regarding testosterone-replacement-therapy, but Dan Henderson believes the punishing striker wasn’t during his memorable 2013 run.

That year, Belfort took out Luke Rockhold, Michael Bisping and Henderson in impressive fashion, and secured a middleweight title shot by doing so. At that time, Belfort was medically licensed to use TRT, but by the time he faced champion Chris Weidman this past year, the practice was no longer allowed.

Speculation and debate regarding Belfort’s TRT use has been reignited in recent weeks, after Deadspin reported that he tested for high levels of testosterone, prior to facing Jon Jones at UFC 152. At a media event on Thursday to promote Saturday’s bout, Henderson was asked about Belfort’s use, and here is some of what he had to say (quotes via MMA Fighting.com):

“By the looks of it, yeah, obviously he was doing more than just TRT,” Henderson said. “He was abusing something. Obviously, we won’t know for sure unless somebody comes out and says they know, but I have no idea. I can only speculate.”

“Well, he’s also tested positive for steroids in the past, and since he’s tested for TRT and other things too,” Henderson argued. “I think that if you look at the picture of both of us when we fought then, and a picture of both of us now, I mean, a picture says a lot. Obviously, he was doing a lot more than I was, my body hasn’t changed at all. I was barely doing any TRT, and I wasn’t abusing anything.”

The 45 year-old Henderson, who is coming off a stoppage win over Tim Boetsch, was also licensed to use TRT before it was banned.

UFC FN 77 will be hosted by Sao Paulo, Brazil.
