Although Glover Teixeira hopes to secure another shot at the light-heavyweight title in the short term future, the veteran understands he has some work to do in the interim.

Teixeira took on fellow contender Patrick Cummins at UFC Fight Night 77 last night, and battled through several takedowns, before finishing the wrestler in round two with strikes. With the win, Teixeira ensured he remains a top five ranked 205’er, and within reach of a title shot.

Speaking to the UFC camera crew after the bout, Teixeira was asked about what he hopes come next, and the Brazilian relayed this:

“I’d like to fight soon for the title, but right now, I just want to work. I want to get back in there and fight whoever is there, you know? To fight, I don’t care who; just have to get the work done.”

Although the UFC hasn’t confirmed a date, champion Daniel Cormier is expected to fight former champ Jon Jones sometime in early 2016. The latter decisioned Teixeira in April, 2014. Top contenders Ryan Bader and Anthony Johnson are already booked to fight on January 30th.

Last night’s win was Teixeira’s second in a row, as he choked out Ovince Saint Preux in August, after he was decisioned by decorated wrestler Phil Davis in October. While discussing Saturday’s victory, Teixeira noted:

“I owe this to the Brazilian fans, and especially for a wrestler like him, because last time I lost to a wrestler, and I owe this to the fans. I’m happy with the victory.”

With the win, the 36 year-old Teixeira pushed his record to 24-4. UFC FN 77 took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
