UFC on FOX 1: Dos Santos Blows Away Velasquez to Take Heavyweight Crown

Junior dos Santos

By FCF Staff

Junior dos Santos made the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s debut bout on the FOX network a short yet memorable affair, as the feared striker needed just over one minute to take the heavyweight championship from Cain Velasquez.

As the historic fight’s opening seconds ticked off, Velasquez kicked away at the legs of dos Santos as the challenger looked to counter. With each man searching for an opening, Velasquez attempted to shoot in for a takedown, but dos Santos sidestepped the attempt and remained on his feet.

Moments later, the number one contender landed a pounding over hand right that caught Velasquez flush on the temple. As the champion crashed to the mat dos Santos swooped in for the finish, and after landing several follow up punches, referee John McCarthy brought the action to a halt.

With the championship win, dos Santos improved his record to 14-1, while Velasquez sees his record drop to 9-1.

As expected, Clay Guida and former WEC lightweight champ Ben Henderson thrilled fans with an action filled bout, which included all that is great about the sport of mixed-martial-arts.

Early on, it appeared for a moment that Henderson might secure a quick victory, as he dropped Guida with a left hook during a wild striking exchange. The resilient Guida rebounded quickly, however, and began his relentless pursuit of his opponent.

Throughout the three round classic, both men were able to secure takedowns and land telling blows, however, Henderson scored more often and controlled the majority of the action. As the fight neared it’s end, Guida, as if sensing he was behind on the scorecards, frantically tried to secure a fight ending choke. The BJJ brown belt defended effectively, however, and as the final seconds counted down Henderson pounded away at Guida with punches from above.

In the end, all three judges scored the bout in Henderson’s favor, entrenching the dynamic fighter in the lightweight division’s number one contender spot.
