UFC on FOX 19: Lyoto Machida Makes Statement Following Removal For Banned Substance

Lyoto Machida has made a statement following the news that he’s been removed from UFC on FOX 19 this weekend, for taking a banned substance.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Machida will no longer fight Dan Henderson on Saturday, after he was informed by USADA that he had been taking a banned substance. The former light-heavyweight champ recently submitted a list of supplements he has been taking, and was then informed he had been taking a substance that is prohibited.

Since then, Machida posted a video statement on Facebook, and said the following in Portuguese (translation via MMA Fighting.com):

“I’m here to tell you that I was caught by surprise by this news,” Machida wrote. “It has been very difficult for me. I’ve trained a lot for this fight, I’ve dedicated a lot with all my teammates. I want to tell you that I really didn’t know about this substance, so I listed it on my declaration form amongst everything else I was taking, and this substance was recently banned in 2016, so I take the blame for not knowing that, and I’d like to say I’m really sorry and apologize to my fans, teammates, and my family… I always try to play by the book, but unfortunately this happened.”

Machida also reported that the substance he has been flagged for is 7-Keto, which contains DHEA. It is listed as an anabolic agent by USADA. MMA Junkie.com is reporting that DHEA has been banned by the World Doping Agency since 2005.

The legendary fighter, who has never failed a drug test previously, could be suspended for up to two years.
