“Jacare” Souza praised Derek Brunson’s growth as a fighter, since their first bout in 2012, but, according to the middleweight, his evolution greatly outpaced the American’s.

The fighters fought in the headliner of UFC on FOX 27 on Saturday, and as was the case in 2012, the Brazilian stopped Brunson in the opening round. Their latest fight, however, went nearly four minutes, while Souza finished their first bout in just 41 seconds.

After the impressive outing, Souza had this to say about Brunson (quote via MMA Junkie):

“He was very smart and sharp, as well, but I had my guard up and was able to block most of the attacks, all of the attacks,” Souza said through an interpreter. “I was very well prepared for the fight. He got better, but I got way better than him. Much better than him.”

Brunson was coming off consecutive, KO wins over Lyoto Machida and Dan Kelly, after he was stopped by Robert Whittaker in 2016. In Souza’s last outing, in April, 2017, he was also finished by Whittaker.
