UFC on FOX 27: “Jacare” Souza Reflects on “Horrible” Run of Medical Issues

"Jacare" Souza

“Jacare” Souza is back in action this Saturday at UFC on FOX 27, following what he describes as a “horrible” run of medical issues.

The Brazilian star will take on fellow middleweight contender Derek Brunson in the card’s main event, which will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina. The bout will mark the first time Souza has fought since he was stopped by Robert Whittaker last April, and since he’s undergone medical procedures for a torn pectoral muscle and appendicitis.

Recently Souza told MMA Junkie the following, while reflecting on the the issues he’s faced in recent years:

“It was horrible,” Souza said. “For all my life as an athlete, I’d never have injuries. And then, in these past few years, it’s one injury after the other, one injury after the other. After this one, I thought, ‘I think I’m going to stop fighting.’ Six months out, with such a serious injury.

“I say that this was the injury of injuries, because of the time I had be away. Six months, without being able to do absolutely anything. And then I return, and I’m fat. I have no timing. I’m out of shape. It was horrible, horrible, horrible. I had one thing that kept me: my will power. That’s it. There was nothing else.”

Souza and Brunson fought back in 2012 under the Strikeforce banner, and the latter was knocked out by the vaunted grappler in round one.
