UFC on FOX 9: Bobby Green Stepping in for Injured Jamie Varner

The December 14th, UFC on FOX 9 card has received another change, as the promotion has announced that lightweight Jamie Varner has withdrawn due to injury, and as a result, Bobby Green will face Pat Healy.

The official confirmation comes not long after Varner relayed on Twitter that he tore his rotator cuff while training, and that he will “be out for a few weeks.”

Green (21-5) is coming off a controversial, TKO win over James Krause at UFC Fight Night 31 last week. Green crumpled Krause to the mat with a hard kick to the body, which appeared to also graze the fighter’s cup. Since Krause, who had already been hit with low blows twice, didn’t immediately get up the bout was called off. The victory was Green’s sixth in a row.

Healy (29-17) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to rising lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 165. The bout marked the first time Healy had fought since UFC 159, when he tested positive for marijuana following his fight with Jim Miller, and was suspended for ninety days.

UFC on FOX 9 will be headlined by a featherweight bout between champion Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez. Originally the card was set to include Josh Thomson challenging lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, but the latter has dropped out due to injury.

The event will take place in Sacramento, California.
