The Ultimate Fighting Championship has confirmed that it will be returning to Australia early next year, as it announced today that a welterweight bout between Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann willl headline a March 3rd event in Sydney.

The bout will be part of the UFC on FX 2 card, which will be broadcast on the FOX owned network. According to the UFC tweet confirming the event, the card will be hosted by Sydney’s Allphones Arena.

Alves (19-8) recently returned to the winners circle by tapping out Papy Abedi with a first round, rear-naked-choke at UFC 138 in November. The win came after Alves lost by unanimous decision to Rick Story at UFC 130 in May.

Kampmann (18-5) is coming off a split decision victory over the aforementioned Story at UFC 139 last month. The victory ended a two fight losing skid for Kampmann, who incurred tightly contested and widely debated decision losses to Diego Sanchez and Jake Shields prior.

Over the weekend, the UFC announced that the upcoming March 3rd card will feature the first flyweight bouts in the promotion’s history, as Demetrious Johnson will take on Ian McCall, and Joseph Benavidez will face Yasuhiro Urushitani.

The winner of each bout will fight at a later date to declare the UFC flyweight champ.
