Ufc To Broadcast Fights On Wowow-tv In Japan, Globosat In Brazil Starting In March, April
From Josh Hedges of Zuffa/UFC: UFC TO BROADCAST FIGHTS ON WOWOW-TV IN JAPAN, GLOBOSAT IN BRAZIL STARTING IN MARCH, APRIL LAS VEGAS, Feb. 28, 2002…The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continues to expand internationally. Executives today announced the world’s leading mixed martial arts sports entertainment company has signed exclusive television distribution agreements with WOWOW-TV in Tokyo, Japan, and Globosat Programadora LTDA and Sportv in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to broadcast its fight shows to those networks’ Japanese and Brazilian subscribers and fight fans. WOWOW-TV, the leading sports and entertainment cable network in Japan, will telecast UFC fight events on a delayed basis starting at 6 p.m., Sunday, April 14, with UFC: Worlds Collide, which will take place Friday, March 22, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. "Ultimate Fighting Championship," a one-hour show featuring championship bouts and top matches will debut in March on Brazil’s Sportv, the country’s leading sports channel. Globosat will offer UFC pay-per-view fights from its library and live pay-per-view events starting Friday, March 22, with UFC: Worlds Collide. That eight-fight card will feature UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture of Gresham, Ore., defending his title against top contender Josh Barnett of Seattle, Wash., in the main event. The co-feature will be Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes’ (Hillsboro, Ill.) first title defense against top-ranked Japanese legend Hayato "Mach" Sakurai of Ibaraki, Japan. Also on the card, top heavyweight contender Pedro Rizzo of Rio de Janeiro, will meet Andre Arlovski of Minsk, Belarus. The WOWOW-TV, Globosat Programadora and Sportv deals follow the UFC’s Feb. 5 exclusive 23-week agreement with British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) to air "Ultimate Fighting Championship" at 11 p.m. each Thursday in the United Kingdom and Ireland. That schedule began Feb. 7. "Japan and Brazil are world leaders in mixed martial arts and the fans in both countries are the most knowledgeable in our sport. These agreements, just like our agreement with Sky, continue to execute our business strategy to make the UFC truly an international brand," said Dana White, UFC president.
