UFC Vet Mike Swick Announces Retirement

Mike Swick

By FCF Staff

After dropping a unanimous decision to Alex Garcia at UFC 189, TUF 1 vet Mike Swick has announced he’s hanging up the gloves at the age of 36.

Swick, who has battled injuries and illness in recent years, was fighting for the first time since December, 2012. Swick battled Garcia throughout the entire fight, but the latter’s wrestling and top game won out.

Recently, Swick announced his retirement via a lengthy statement on his Facebook page. Here is some of what the accomplished fighter had to say:

July 11th 2015 at UFC 189 was officially my final fight. I was healthy and injury free for the first time in 8 years but still couldn’t put my game together. There comes a time when every fighter realizes he is older and not what he use to be and I want to acknowledge this and stay true and honest to what I have always said, that I will leave when I know I am done. It’s a hard thing to do considering everyone wants to go out on top, unfortunately when your actually on top, you never wanna go out.

It’s unfair to the UFC, the fans and to my family and friends for me to keep chasing this career while giving performances that I am not proud of…

Swick went on to thanks his friends, families, coaches and training partners, and also relayed that he will continue to “grow” his AKA Thailand gym.

The San Jose fighter retires from MMA having gone 15-6.
