UFC’s Dana White Says Chael Sonnen Remains a Friend, But You Have to be an “Idiot to Mess Around With Drugs”

As the MMA world continues to buzz over the news that Chael Sonnen has failed a second drug test, and as a result, has lost his commentating duties with FOX Sports, Dana White has weighed in on the situation.
In the UFC President’s weekly interview with UFC.com, here is some of what White had to say about Sonnen:
“It’s very hard for me because I care about him a lot as a friend,” White said. “I like Chael Sonnen….He had four banned substances in his body, so what are you going to do?”
“The hardest part about it is that Chael Sonnen is a very intelligent guy and look what it’s done. It’s just terrible,” added White. “If it happened to a guy that was not as bright, you’re like, it’s unfortunate but the guy isn’t very bright.’ You have to be a real stupid f—– idiot to mess around with drugs right now in this sport.”
Sonnen, who has been temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, has another hearing with the organization set for July 23rd.
The 37 year-old fighter announced he was retiring from the sport after he failed his first random drug test. After those test results became public, Sonnen argued that he was taking the substances (anastrozole and clomiphen) as a means to transition off of testosterone-replacement-therapy.
Sonnen also reportedly tested positive for human growth hormone (HGH) and recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) in his second drug test.
