Tony Ferguson will battle Kevin Lee for an interim lightweight title on October 7th, but UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby’s reported that Khabib Nurmagomedov was offered a bout with “El Cucuy” first.

During the “Watch List” segment for UFC 216, Shelby said the following (quote via MMA Junkie.com):

“Just to clear things up, a fight was offered to Nurmagomedov on Nov. 4 (at UFC 217), and at that point, we were trying to put cards together toward the end of the year,” Shelby said. “I was informed that (Nurmagomedov) could not make that date, and he probably wouldn’t be able to fight until at least December, so that left Tony without a dance partner.”

Nurmagomedov, who is currently ranked #1 in the lightweight division, has fought just twice since 2014 due to injuries and medical issues.
