Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz battled at UFC 196 last March, in what was one of the biggest bouts in MMA history, but according to Urijah Faber he was also offered the fight.

McGregor was originally scheduled to fight then lightweight champ, Rafael dos Anjos at the March 5th card. But, when dos Anjos went down with an injury, the UFC scrambled to find a replacement opponent. Ultimately Diaz was signed for the fight.

Faber recently attended a Q&A session in advance of UFC Fight Night 122, and during it, the retired fighter reported this (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Actually, a lot of people don’t know that I was offered a fight with Conor McGregor – the same fight that Nate Diaz got,” Faber said. “And I was going to go up two weight classes and fight him on three weeks’ notice.”

“Dana said he was going to give that fight to me, and Conor wanted Nate – and you saw what happened there,” added Faber.

“The California Kid” also reportedly said that if he had fought McGregor, he would tried to take the bigger fighter to the ground. Diaz went on to submit McGregor in the second round of the memorable fight. The two rematched in August at UFC 202, and McGregor won the bout via majority decision.
