Vitor Belfort Injured, Wanderlei Silva to Fight Cung Le at UFC 139

By FCF Staff

Just days after it was announced that Vitor Belfort would face former Strikeforce star Cung Le at the upcoming November 19th, UFC 139 card in San Jose, Belfort has been forced to withdraw from the event due to injury. UFC President Dana White has announced via his Twitter account that Wanderlei Silva (pictured) will step in for the injured Belfort. The nature of the former light-heavyweight champ’s injury was not disclosed.

Vitor is injured and out of San Jose fight. Now Cung Le will fight Wandy!

Silva (33-11-1) last competed at UFC 132 in July and was promptly knocked out by Chris Leben in the first round. Prior to the defeat, the 35 year-old Silva worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Michael Bisping at UFC 110 in February, 2010.

The former Pride champion is 2-3 in his last five fights.

Le (7-1) recently signed with the UFC after publicly campaigning for a spot on the November 19th card, which will take place in his hometown of San Jose. The decorated San Shou competitor is coming off a knockout win over Scott Smith in June, to avenge his December, 2009, stoppage loss to the UFC vet.

The 39 year-old-fighter has won all seven of his professional victories via TKO or KO.

UFC 139 will be hosted by San Jose’s HP Pavilion and will feature a light-heavyweight bout between Dan Henderson and Mauricion “Shogun” Rua in the main event.
